Easy Ways You Can Restore The Health of Your Gums

Dr. Hoda Hosseini, Dr. Katie Chung, and the team at ClearCare Periodontal & Implant Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, educate patients on how to restore their oral health. When patients with gum disease visit Dr. Hosseini and the team, it is generally treatable and reversible. It can become more complicated if gum disease has progressed to later stages. Even still, it can be treated and reversed with treatment. In addition, there are several steps you can take to help restore the health of your gums.

Make Sure To Brush Twice Daily

Brushing twice a day for about two minutes at a time using fluoride toothpaste is not only a cornerstone of excellent oral hygiene, but it will also help reverse any existing gum disease. Brushing with the proper technique will remove harmful bacteria and plaque and reduce your risk for tooth decay and gum disease.

Don’t Forget To Floss

Many people are excellent at brushing their teeth, but a surprisingly large amount of the population does not floss. Flossing is essential to remove food particles and bacteria from between the teeth and along the gumline. It provides added protection against interproximal plaque and gum disease. It is recommended that you floss once a day and do so before brushing. This allows any plaque to loosen so that your toothbrush can remove it more effectively. Water flossers are a great alternative if you prefer something other than traditional floss.

Avoid The Use of Tobacco

If you currently use either smoking or smokeless tobacco, you are at an increased risk for serious health issues, including gum disease and cancer. When you use tobacco products, the toxins contained in the tobacco cause your blood vessels to constrict. This reduces blood flow and nutrients to your gums, weakening and making them more prone to infection. If you are a tobacco user, you should seek ways to reduce and eliminate its use. Your gums (and the rest of your body) will be healthier for it.
